In the City: International Music Convention
Manchester, 1992 –

In The City emerged out of a proposal Chris Roche first put to Manchester City Council in 1991 and led to discussions with Tony Wilson, head of Factory Records and co-owner of Manchester’s Hacienda Nightclub. It became Europe’s biggest urban music festival and ran for 15 years, helping to transform the music industry in Manchester, and resulting in the discovery of countless unsigned bands both local and international, arguably the biggest of which was the then unsigned local band Elbow. Chris Roche a former punk band manager in the 1970’s was to share a stage with Malcolm McLaren the former manager of the Sex Pistols.
